When someone mentions the name Irving “Magic” Johnson many adjectives come to mind. Many people don’t know but Johnson got the name “Magic” as a high school student for his flashy ball handling skills. Johnson was an NBA hall fame basketball player that had tremendous success on the court. But off the court he has been able to start numerous positive movements where he has also made a name for himself post professional basketball career. How he overcame adversity in his life is frequently talked about and looked upon by fans to help them endure troublesome times. Magic Johnson touched many in 1991 when he announced publicly that he was HIV positive. The Courage to this for a man of his statue speaks volumes to athletes and fans about his character.

His character and resilience as a man was shown on that day in 1991, but it has been evidenced in his works thereafter.  After his announcement he would retire from basketball for several years and then return to play one final season. After being fully retired Magic would become an entrepreneur, HIV/AIDS activist, part owner of the LA Dodgers, and president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers. Magic has also created affordable entertainment and camp structures for impoverished kids in communities that need it the most. Johnson’s story is a true inspiration for people that deal with hard times in life to keep going no matter the circumstances.
